I’ve been thinking about the value of a conversation. I have a friend I’ve known for more than sixty years, and we’ve spent countless hours talking about just about everything. We have different backgrounds, different experiences, and sometimes very different opinions. Yet I can’t remember our conversations becoming disrespectful. Our friendship matters more than winning an argument. Sometimes we reach a fork in the road and choose the same direction. Sometimes we take different paths. Either way, we’ve usually learned something along the way. That has led me to wonder whether we sometimes measure conversations by the wrong standard. Must we agree for a conversation to be worthwhile? Or can we come away with a better understanding of another person, even when our opinions haven’t changed? I also wonder whether learning to have meaningful conversations is a little like learning mathematics. We begin with the basics, build on our experiences, and discover there’s always more to learn. In this episode, I want to explore what we bring to conversations, what we take away from them, and how those experiences might help us become more understanding people. Maybe the most important question isn’t whether we won, but what we learned.
